Vicente Dopico's Biography

Born in Havana, Cuba, in 1943, Vicente Dopico-Lerner moved to Miami in 1965. In 1976, he received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of St. Thomas in Florida. Shortly thereafter, he received his Masters degree in Science, as well as completing courses at the Art Students League, Florida Atlantic University and the Florida International University.

Dopico-Lerner's intriguing works have captivated art lovers for decades. His watercolors on paper and oils on canvas possess at once a moody, surreal and penetrating quality. But, his works are full of exciting contradictions. Pigments either explode in bursts, or evolve from a dark, strange core, or there is a total absence of color altogether. Subjects at first appear playful, whimsical, but on closer examination there is weightiness, or is it an underlying melancholy that is oozing from the darkness. Other times we are joyously swept away with the feast of images that transform from human to animal and back again in an almost lyrical way. A profound tale, however, is being told, and we have to decipher it with the esoteric clues that are mapped out for us. Dopico-Lerner has exposed his extraordinary imagination, his originality and his talents to reveal a mysterious human spirit.

Dopico-Lerner has won awards for his fascinating art and has participated in more than 50 group and one-man exhibitions. In 1997, together with other artists, he founded the Bird Road Art Connection, a community of artists inside a commercial district in the City of Miami. In 1998, he received public recognition from the City of Miami for his contribution to the Arts.
