Ken Hammond's Biography

Ken Hammond was born in Surrey, England, in 1948. He is a self-taught artist. His love of the coastal scenery and old ships has brought him to the South Coast where he now lives.

As a child Hammond spent holidays with his uncle who was a fisherman on the River Fowey in Cornwall. This is where the influence of estuary and harbor scenes in his painting comes from.

Additionally, as a member of the crew on the sailing ship "Sir Winston Churchill", Hammond has acquired a deep understanding of the rigging and handling of older working vessels. These ships play a strong part in his paintings.

Hammond has been profoundly influenced by the great Dutch Masters and the Norwich School of Painters. This plus his appreciation and ability to work in all painting media has culminated in a varied and stunning body of work.
