Gehry Welty's Biography

Gehry Welty was born in California in 1962. At an early age Welty exhibited his artistic talent; he was placed in advanced art programs and discovered the direction his career was to take. In 1980, he was selected for the Master's Competition in the Los Angeles Unified School District. In 1982, Welty moved to Maui, Hawaii, and soon after had shows at the Hedy Walter Gallery in 1983, and at the Front Street Gallery in 1984. From 1986 until 1987, he attended the Art Center of Design in Pasadena, California, and then worked for Lordhill and Associates as an illustrator for such clients as Jacques Cousteau Society and the Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena.

In 1991, Welty returned to Maui and and displayed his works at exhibits and continuous showings at the Metropolitan Gallery. His first international showings were at the Metroploitan Galleries in Tokyo, Kawasaki, Osaka and Kobe, In 1995, this artist showed at ArtExpo in Las Vegas and currently shows extensively throughout Japan, Hawaii and the continental United States.

Welty paints from his experience and from his imagination. The results are works that are timeless glimpses of nature in stunning detail and in perfect saturated hues. His paintings beckon us, the viewer, inside to share his space. Whether it is a painting of a picturesque ocean, calm and careening up the shore, or an idyllic deserted island, Welty's depiction is uncluttered and stirs the soul.
